UniKL MITEC Bachelor of Engineering Technology in Instrumentation and Control Engineering (BICE) is a hands-on program which concerns on the application and implementation of measurement and control techniques of process variables for monitoring, record, control and performance assessment of a wide range of manufacturing and industrial processes.
BICE is developed to ensure students gain maximum skills in specific control disciplines such as advanced process control (APC), distributed control systems (DCS), programmable logic controllers (PLC), and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA). The use of these disciplines will depend on the exact nature of individual job roles. To ensure the understanding of these specific disciplines, on the first three semesters, BICE focuses on transferring knowledge of electronics fundamentals to the students such as electrical and electronic devices, analog electronic, digital system, signal & system, sensor & actuator, microprocessor & micro controller, etc.
For the next three semesters, BICE concentrates on the knowledge of process variables in various industrial applications. Applications which are covered in BICE are chemical & bioprocess, environmental, piping, manufacturing material, industrial automation and much more.
Programming is the heart of BICE. Various simulator and programming software will be introduced to the students such as C programming, MATLAB. MULTISIM and LABVIEW. The hands-on laboratory component is designed to enable the student to experience the installation, configuration, calibration, troubleshooting & maintain instruments (pneumatic, analog, digital) as well as implement various techniques of modern control systems in a variety of replicated industrial settings.
The need of Instrumentation and Control in industry
Instrumentation and control systems are used in most industries to measure and control variables such as pressure, flow, level, temperature, density, Ph (acidity or alkalinity), mass, conductivity, motion, force and chemical composition. These variables are consistently measured and monitored to ensure the output of a specific process are within a desired acceptable range and at the same time protect the safety of equipment in the system. Small changes in these variables may alter a process which produces a large impact at the end of the result. Corrective action needs to be done immediately to control these variables back for a stable process system.
In most industries, a large number of process variables are monitored simultaneously. The advancement of technology in Instrumentation and Control engineering (ICE) fields enable industries to have only a small staff of operating personnel to operate a complex process from a central control room. ICE technology is the tool that enables manufacturers to keep their operations running within specified limits and to set more precise limits to maximize profitability, and at the same time to ensure quality and safety.

Instrumentation and Control Engineering Technologist (ICET) is responsible for installing, managing and/or maintaining equipment which is used to monitor & control engineering systems, machinery, and processes in various industries. ICET needs to ensure that these systems and processes operate effectively, efficiently and safely. In order to do this, ICET requires a thorough understanding of the whole operational processes of the industry. As for that, they will have a multidisciplinary role, working closely with colleagues across a number of functions, including operations, purchasing, and design. SALARY AND WORKING CONDITIONS Salary levels for ICET vary according to the size of organization, industry sector and geographical location. In Malaysia, average starting salaries for ICET graduates is monthly around RM 2,500. Average salaries for those with years of experience range from RM 4,500 to RM 12,000 a month. Internationally, typical starting salaries for Instrumentation and Control Engineering graduates range from RM100,000 to RM150,000 a year. International salaries for those in a senior or lead role range between RM175,000 and RM300,000 annually. ICET maybe worked based in an office, laboratory or factory, depending on the nature of the industry. The nature of the job sometimes requires them to be on-call or on standby to deal with disturbance or faults which occur at the plant or site. Instrumentation and Control Engineering fields sometimes carry high levels of responsibility and may be stressful, particularly at a very senior level, where accountability lies directly with them in which they often have to work under pressure, to tight deadlines, and within budget. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES ICET develops skills in specific control disciplines such as distributed control systems (DCS), programmable logic controllers (PLC), and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA). The use of these disciplines will depend on the exact nature of individual job roles. Daily task and responsibility of ICET include testing, maintaining and modifying existing systems. Installing and commissioning new control systems is also one of the main tasks of ICET. ICET must have managing skill to make a fast decision and have the capability to analyze daily data and interpret the status of the system. Notebooks and computers are the friendly tools which always accompany ICET in doing their routine jobs. They usually have to write computer programs and upload test procedure to the system. In the event of disturbance to the plant, ICET requires troubleshooting and problem-solving skills to remove the disturbance. Sometimes, they have to liaise with clients, suppliers, contractors and relevant authorities to solve the problem. ICET is also required to understand and ensure the existing systems are in compliance with the health & safety regulations and quality standards set by the government and industries. POTENTIAL EMPLOYERS ICET is needed in a range of engineering sectors including rail, construction, telecommunications and automotive. The most widely recognized recruiters of ICET are in the following types of organizations: • Oil and Gas • Automotive and Manufacturing • Information Technology • Biomedical and Pharmaceutical • Energy Supply • Communications • Electronics • Computer systems • Defense-related industries. ICET is also employed by companies which produce control and instrumentation equipment.
