Apart from that, students will be taught to be a critical thinker, problem solvers and independent workers as the field is filled with variety and challenges.

The programme combines theory and practical knowledge in the field of facilities maintenance where students not only learn in theory in the classroom, but they are able to learn hands-on in the laboratory sessions and workshops by completing course assignment that mimic real project work in the field. Many of the equipment used in laboratories and workshops are certainly in high quality and in line with the equipment used in the real industry. Therefore, the students will benefit on early exposures on equipment used in high-tech industries in addition to avoid the symptoms of culture shock when entering the real jobs arena.

The required skills and knowledge that students will learn including the operation of boiler system, HVAC systems, hydraulic and pneumatic system, compressor system, bearing and rigging system, welding, heat and pump system, basic electrical, fire warning systems (Fire Alarm), computer maintenance management system(CMMS), electrical control devices and safety etc.

The course outcome was specially design to meet the employment requirement in the industry (automotive, oil and gas, petro-chemical, electronics, heavy industry and power plant) and service sectors (hospital, government and private buildings). Due to that, the graduates of this course have vast employment opportunities in the industry. Among the jobs that should be pursued by the graduates of this course are facility maintenance engineer, M&E engineers, boilerman, steam engineers, Lift / Escalator Inspector, TPM engineer, CBM engineer and other positions related to the maintenance jobs.

This programme not only provides knowledge about maintenance but also provides a platform for preparation of the students to gain professional certification such as OSHA certificates, boilerman certificate, steam engineer certificate, welding inspector certificate, certificate in energy manager or AutoCAD & Solidwork certificate as an added value. With the availability of professional certificates, it will increase the value of graduate employability and their career opportunities are wide open.

Career prospects

The focus of the Facilities Maintenance Engineering (FaME) programme covers in two main sectors which are the industrial sector (automotive, oil and gas, petro-chemical, electronics, heavy industry and power plant) and service sector (hospitals, government, and private building). Listed below are some of the potential jobs for FaME’s graduates. Facilities Maintenance Engineer / Facilities Manager A facilities engineer (or a facilities manager) typically has hands-on responsibility for the employer’s electrical engineering, maintenance, environmental, health, safety, energy, controls/instrumentation, civil engineering, and HVAC needs. The need for expertise in these categories varies widely depending on whether the facility is, for example, a single-use site or a multi-use campus; whether it is an office, school, hospital, museum, processing/production plant, etc. Maintenance Engineer A Maintenance Engineer normally has to prepare, schedule and implement the facility’s preventive and remedial maintenance program in accordance with Quality, Environment and Safety regulations and within an agreed financial framework. They also have to organise and coordinate the work carried out by the teams, contribute to preparing the renewal plan, organise and monitor work to be done as part of the annual capital expenditure program, contribute to internal and external reporting, and manage subcontractors and supplies as well as applying the Quality, Environment and Safety systems process. M & E Engineer M&E Engineers provides a wide range of services. Integrating the mechanical, electrical and operational parameters of any project, not only with each other, but also with the overriding needs and objectives of the facility, owner, operating staff, and inhabitants is the goal of M&E Engineers Waste & Water Treatment Engineer The waste and water treatment engineer has to ensure and optimise process operation, guarantee the quality of the waste water collected and purified, control operating expenses, organise and coordinate the work carried out by the teams, implement contractual clauses, recommend technical developments, build and develop relationships with customers and partners, contribute to reporting, manage subcontractors and supplies along with applying Quality, Environment and Safety systems practice.
