The programme is fully by research in the fields of study in economics, development studies, public administration, politics and applied statistics. The main objective of the programme is to develop skills of students in designing original research and conducting research independently. In the process, students learn to synthesise and evaluate critically scholarly literature, communicate research findings effectively to the broader scientific community and develop a sense of professional ethics in research. Students are also trained to publish in scholarly journals and present their research findings at international forums. Through the programme, students are able to advance their knowledge in the selected field of specialization, and to explore and extend the boundaries of knowledge through research.
Applicants for the PhD programme at the University of Malaya must satisfy the following requirements:
- A master’s degree by way of research; or
- A master’s degree by coursework or by mixed mode with CGPA of not less than 3.7; or
- A master’s degree by coursework or by mixed mode with CGPA between 2.0 and 3.69 and an undergraduate degree with CGPA not less than 3.0; or
- A master’s degree by coursework or by mixed mode with CGPA between 2.0 and 3.69 and an undergraduate degree with CGPA between 2.5 and 2.99, and one (1) of the following criteria:
- relevant work experience;
- publication in the relevant field;
- applicant is a scholarship holder;
- applicant is a University of Malaya graduate.
- Applicants with a Bachelor’s Degree with CGPA of not less than 3.7 may be admitted to the PhD Programme. These candidates are required to defend their candidature in a research progress seminar to be held on a date two (2) semesters from the initial registration date; failing which the candidature may be converted to the relevant Master’s degree.
English Language Requirement for Non-Malaysian
TOEFL – score 550; or
IELTS (Academic) – band 6.00; or
Pass English Language course offered by University of Malaya (UMCCed) ; or
Who possesses a degree or degrees from a university or an institution of higher education where the medium of instruction is in English language.
