Institute for Advanced Studies (IAS), formely known as Institute of Graduate Studies (IGS), is Malaysian first postgraduate and advanced research institution within a university providing facilities for multidisciplinary studies. Since its inception in 1979, the IAS has been offering an extensive range of graduate research opportunities and the number of postgraduate candidates has increased significantly over the years.
IAS is highly recognized for conducting leading edge research in key areas of sciences, social sciences and humanities. In addition to the research centres base across the faculties, the IAS has four Higher Institution Centres of Excellence (HiCoE) and two University of Malaya Centres of Excellence (UMCoE), namely, the University of Malaya (UM) Power Energy Dedicated Advanced Centre (UMPEDAC), Nanotechnology and Catalysis Research Centre (NANOCAT), Photonic Research Centre (PRC), Institute of Ocean and Earth Sciences (IOES), Centre for Research in Biotechnology for Agriculture (CEBAR) and Tropical Infectious Research and Education Centre (TIDREC).
Applicants for the PhD programme at the University of Malaya must satisfy the following requirements:
- A master’s degree by way of research; or
- A master’s degree by coursework or by mixed mode with CGPA of not less than 3.7; or
- A master’s degree by coursework or by mixed mode with CGPA between 2.0 and 3.69 and an undergraduate degree with CGPA not less than 3.0; or
- A master’s degree by coursework or by mixed mode with CGPA between 2.0 and 3.69 and an undergraduate degree with CGPA between 2.5 and 2.99, and one (1) of the following criteria:
- relevant work experience;
- publication in the relevant field;
- applicant is a scholarship holder;
- applicant is a University of Malaya graduate.
- Applicants with a Bachelor’s Degree with CGPA of not less than 3.7 may be admitted to the PhD Programme. These candidates are required to defend their candidature in a research progress seminar to be held on a date two (2) semesters from the initial registration date; failing which the candidature may be converted to the relevant Master’s degree.
English Language Requirement for Non-Malaysian
TOEFL – score 550; or
IELTS (Academic) – band 6.00; or
Pass English Language course offered by University of Malaya (UMCCed) ; or
Who possesses a degree or degrees from a university or an institution of higher education where the medium of instruction is in English language.
