This programme is designed especially with medical practitioners of University Malaya Medical Center (UMMC) in mind.
The Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) is a doctorate level degree held by medical doctors. In the United Kingdom and many other Commonwealth countries, the M.D. is a higher doctoral degree reserved for those who have contributed significantly to the academic study of medicine and surgery. Unlike the Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) offered by U.S medical schools and some Malaysian medical schools, this is a doctorate programme and the candidate must already have the necessary medical experience before applying for this programme.
Eligibility
Applicants for the PhD programme at the University of Malaya must satisfy the following requirements:
- A master’s degree by way of research; or
- A master’s degree by coursework or by mixed mode with CGPA of not less than 3.7; or
- A master’s degree by coursework or by mixed mode with CGPA between 2.0 and 3.69 and an undergraduate degree with CGPA not less than 3.0; or
- A master’s degree by coursework or by mixed mode with CGPA between 2.0 and 3.69 and an undergraduate degree with CGPA between 2.5 and 2.99, and one (1) of the following criteria:
- relevant work experience;
- publication in the relevant field;
- applicant is a scholarship holder;
- applicant is a University of Malaya graduate.
- Applicants with a Bachelor’s Degree with CGPA of not less than 3.7 may be admitted to the PhD Programme. These candidates are required to defend their candidature in a research progress seminar to be held on a date two (2) semesters from the initial registration date; failing which the candidature may be converted to the relevant Master’s degree.
English Language Requirement for Non-Malaysian
TOEFL – score 550; or
IELTS (Academic) – band 6.00; or
Pass English Language course offered by University of Malaya (UMCCed) ; or
Who possesses a degree or degrees from a university or an institution of higher education where the medium of instruction is in English language.
