What will you learn?

The Department of Physics has seen tremendous growth since its inception in 1959. The academic staff members are actively involved in many areas of physics research. The strength of the Department lies in the areas of solid state physics, plasma physics, applied radiation, laser physics, photonics, solid state ionic, advanced materials, polymer physics, space physics as well as theoretical physics. The quality of research is of international standing with staff members regularly publishing in highly reputed international Journals. Beside research, some of the staff members also carry out consultancy work for local as well as international companies such as Tenaga Nasional Research & Development (TNRD), Nippon Glass (Japan) and Ciba Vision (USA). All the academic and consultancy activities provide the essential background for postgraduate training.

Eligibility

• National Higher School Certificate (or an Advanced Level equivalent) with the grade 80% and above

Or

• A Diploma from recognized Institutions with at least a CGPA of 3.00.

• Applicant may be required to undergo an interview session for certain selection program before being accepted by the respective faculty.

 Students are required to enrol in the Malay Language Program prior to being conferred a degree.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS

Students must obtain:

• TOEFL score of 500 (PBT), 173 (CBT) or 60 (IBT) and above

Or

• IELTS Band 5.0 - 6.5 and above

Or

• Pass in any equivalent English proficiency test approved and recognized by the University of Malaya.

Career prospects

Some graduates pursue a career in engineering or manufacturing. In engineering, you design new products or production processes, working for a major company or as an independent adviser. In manufacturing, the focus is on innovations in the production process. Twenty per cent of our graduates work at management level. Some head corporate Research & Development departments, while others are production managers or general managers. Applied Physics graduates regularly pursue careers in information technology. In addition, consultancy firms (e.g. Arthur D. Little, McKinsey) regularly hire applied physicists. Over ten percent of our graduates currently work abroad.
